WHO WE ARE
We are a group of concerned citizens dedicated to building community partnerships that support the development of a healthy and drug free environment for youth and families in Secaucus.
The Secaucus Coalition for a Healthy and Drug-Free Community is a volunteer and staff run organization with a mission to raise awareness and reduce the negative impacts of alcohol and prescription drug abuse in the community of Secaucus.
- The Secaucus Coalition for a Healthy and Drug Free Community partners with community leaders to achieve the following goals:
- Decrease the number of youth who are using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
- Increase youth perception of personal harms caused by alcohol, tobacco and other drugs
- Increase the frequency of youth and parents who express their disapproval of youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug use
- Collaborate with community partners to battle underage drinking, prescription misuse, and drug abuse.
- Conduct environmental assessments to examine effectiveness and progress of prevention strategies.
Through the efforts of the Secaucus Municipal Alliance, the Town of Secaucus was awarded the Drug-Free Communities Support Grant provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 2014. Since then the Municipal Alliance and the Secaucus Coalition for a Healthy and Drug Free Community work in collaboration to reduce substance abuse issues in the community.
With a reinforced and strengthened vision to provide support and bring awareness about underage drinking and prescription drug abuse and misuse. Substance abuse can be an abstract topic with undermined attention and therefore it often takes place behind the scenes unnoticed. It is our main goal as a coalition to empower our community with the knowledge and tools to recognize potential drug abuse risks and threats in our surroundings.
The Town of Secaucus is proud to recognize the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration for awarding the community a generous grant to help support our drug prevention efforts for adolescents.
The Drug Free Communities Support Grant is an initiative of SAMHSA, the Executive Office of the President and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) to support coalitions in strengthening collaboration among community partners and to support community efforts to prevent and reduce substance use among youth.
While working with community leaders, the Secaucus Coalition for a Healthy and Drug Free Community utilizes this funding to implement community-level strategies that will help reduce our prescription drug abuse and underage drinking issues.
On behalf of the Coalition, Town of Secaucus and our community, we thank SAMHSA for providing resources to our coalition to help reduce drug and alcohol related issues in our community.
The Secaucus Municipal Alliance was started in 1993 thanks to a grant from the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in an effort to reduce underage drinking issues in the community of Secaucus. The Municipal Alliance Grant has provided funding to support drug education and training programs for adolescents.
The Secaucus Municipal Alliance engages residents, local government and law enforcement officials, schools and nonprofits, the faith community, parents, youth and other allies in its efforts to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in the community.
Working together the alliance members plan for and develop evidence-based and community level prevention strategies to target substance abuse. On behalf of the Town of Secaucus, we thank SAMHSA for providing resources to our coalition to help reduce drug and alcohol related issues in our community.
The Town of Secaucus has been a longtime supporter and a key partner of drug-related prevention efforts. For several years, the Town has provided the in-kind supplies and services that help to maintain the state grant supporting drug use prevention among adolescents. More recently the Town has been an active supporter of the Drug Free Communities Grant as well allowing us to work with shared resources and with great support from our local government.
The Secaucus Police Department has been a long time partner of the Secaucus Municipal Alliance in educating the youth through the DARE Program. The DARE was recently changed to Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D.), a program dedicated to teaching young students about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.
The SPD are also actively involved in community wide events and efforts to help maintain a safe and healthy environment for families in Secaucus.
